Why and how to have a Friday routine

Setting up a Friday routine will allow you to forget work at 5 pm on the Friday and start the following new week at 9 am on Monday, knowing what work you have to do and when.

You’ll be able to really enjoy your weekend and have peaceful sleep on your days off work; not waking in the early hours by the dreaded mind midges which gnaw away at the ‘did I do’… areas of our brain.

How I set up my Friday routine

Fridays tend to be less busy for me – I schedule my work week in advance and purposely leave Friday afternoons, from 3 pm on wards as an uncluttered easy work time; not put my feet up and start the weekend time. But. All of my deadlines are well out of the way by lunchtime, and I’m left with less taxing work to complete.

At roughly 3:30 pm my end of the week routine begins. Here’s how to put your Friday routine in place:

  • Check your task list to make sure that you’ve not missed any deadlines and the list is full of green ticks. If you haven’t, don’t panic, or think this isn’t going to work for you. You still have time to make sure everything is completed.
  • Next on to email. I’m presuming that you haven’t got 3 months’ worth of email to tackle. Check that all of your week’s email which are flagged as ‘follow-up’ have been dealt with and either replied to, filed or deleted. Deal with them accordingly.
  • Start working on your task list for the following week. Also check your email/calendar to ensure you have all of the required information you need to start working through your schedule on Monday morning. Again, if you do it now, there is still time to contact your client for the missing information.
  • Tidy your desk: Remove scribbled notes you’ve made during the working week. Complete all of the weeks filing.
  • If like me you manage clients’ social media.  Run a last minute check to make sure that they haven’t received direct messages or requests for orders/work.

Shut down your PC, close your office door and have a restful weekend, knowing that your Friday routine is complete. Once you get into the habit of using this routine you’ll see the benefits instantly.
